Reviews Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye by Victoria Laurie

As I settled into my favorite reading nook last weekend, I found myself drawn to “Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye” by Victoria Laurie. I’ll admit, I was in the mood for something light and entertaining, and the blend of mystery and paranormal elements promised just that. Plus, who doesn’t love a good psychic protagonist?

From the first few pages, I was immediately drawn into Abby’s world. There’s something inherently fascinating about a character who can peek into the future, and Abby’s profession as a psychic intuitive had me hooked. I found myself chuckling at her witty observations and the way she navigated her unique abilities in everyday life.Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye by Victoria Laurie

The plot revolves around Abby getting tangled up in a murder investigation involving one of her clients. Now, I’m no stranger to cozy mysteries, but the psychic twist added a fresh layer of intrigue. I couldn’t help but root for Abby as she tried to prove her worth to the skeptical police force, all while dealing with the handsome (and equally skeptical) Detective Dutch Rivers.

One of the strongest aspects of the book, in my opinion, is the way Laurie balances the paranormal elements with the more grounded aspects of the story. Abby’s psychic abilities never felt too over-the-top or unbelievable. Instead, they added just the right amount of spice to what could have otherwise been a run-of-the-mill mystery.

I particularly enjoyed the romantic subplot between Abby and Dutch. Their banter was entertaining, and the tension between Abby’s belief in her abilities and Dutch’s skepticism created some genuinely funny and touching moments. There’s a scene where Abby tries to prove her psychic powers to Dutch in a restaurant that had me grinning from ear to ear.

That being said, the book isn’t without its flaws. At times, I found Abby’s actions a bit frustrating. There were moments when I wanted to reach into the pages and give her a good shake, especially when she made decisions that seemed, well, less than psychic in their wisdom. But I suppose that’s part of what makes her relatable – she’s gifted, but she’s also human.

The mystery itself was engaging, but I’ll confess that I saw the resolution coming from a mile away. The foreshadowing felt a bit heavy-handed at times, which took away some of the suspense. However, I found that I didn’t mind too much – I was more invested in Abby’s journey and her developing relationship with Dutch than I was in the whodunit aspect.

Laurie’s writing style is breezy and accessible, perfect for a cozy mystery. While it might not win any literary awards, it served the story well and kept me turning pages late into the night. I particularly appreciated her ability to inject humor into tense situations, which kept the tone light even when dealing with serious subjects.

One passage that stuck with me was when Abby described her psychic abilities as “like trying to tune into a radio station with bad reception.” It was such a vivid and relatable way to describe something most of us can’t experience, and it really helped me connect with Abby’s struggles.

Reading this book made me reflect on the nature of intuition and how we all, to some degree, rely on our “gut feelings.” While I may not be psychic, I found myself paying more attention to those little hunches and instincts in my daily life after finishing the book. It’s a reminder that there’s often more to perception than what meets the eye.

Would I recommend “Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye” to others? Absolutely, with a few caveats. If you’re looking for a deep, complex mystery or profound character development, this might not be the book for you. But if you’re in the mood for a fun, light-hearted read with a supernatural twist, Abby Cooper is your girl.

In fact, I’ve already recommended it to my best friend, who loves nothing more than curling up with a cozy mystery on a rainy day. I told her, “Imagine if your favorite psychic hotline operator decided to solve crimes – that’s Abby Cooper in a nutshell!”

As for me, I’m looking forward to diving into the next book in the series. There’s something comforting about finding a new character to follow, especially one as charming and quirky as Abby. Plus, I’m dying to see how her relationship with Dutch develops.

In the end, “Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye” was exactly what I needed – a delightful escape into a world where intuition is a superpower and even the most skeptical detective can be won over by a little bit of magic (and a lot of persistence). It may not have changed my life, but it certainly brightened my weekend and left me with a smile on my face. And sometimes, that’s exactly what a good book should do.
