Reviews The Cat Who Could Read Backwards by Lilian Jackson Braun

I recently finished reading “The Cat Who Could Read Backwards” and I must say, it was quite a delightful experience! I stumbled upon this book while browsing the cozy mystery section at my local bookstore. As a cat lover and someone who enjoys lighthearted whodunits, the quirky title and adorable cat on the cover immediately caught my eye. Little did I know, I was about to be swept up in a charming tale full of humor, intrigue, and one very special feline.

The story follows Jim Qwilleran, a witty and down-on-his-luck reporter who takes a job as an art critic. He quickly finds himself in the midst of a perplexing murder mystery within the city’s eccentric art community. But Qwilleran has a secret weapon – Koko, a brilliant Siamese cat with a knack for reading backwards and uncovering crucial clues. Together, this unlikely duo sets out to solve the crime and expose the culprit.

One of the strengths of this novel is the utterly charming dynamic between Qwilleran and Koko. Their bond develops throughout the story in a way that warmed my heart. Braun’s descriptions of Koko’s mannerisms and personality quirks are so vivid, I felt like I could reach out and pet this clever kitty. I found myself chuckling at Qwilleran’s wry observations and the way Koko always seemed to be one step ahead of him.The Cat Who Could Read Backwards by Lilian Jackson Braun

The plot, while perhaps not the most complex mystery I’ve ever read, kept me engaged with its steady pacing and colorful cast of suspects. I particularly enjoyed how Braun wove art world politics and drama into the narrative. It added an extra layer of intrigue. The final reveal was satisfying, tying up the various threads in a neat little bow.

Braun’s writing style is breezy and accessible with a touch of sophistication. Her descriptions paint a vivid picture without bogging down the story. I found myself effortlessly transported into Qwilleran’s world. One of my favorite passages was when Qwilleran first meets Koko: “The Siamese gave him an appraising look, as if he were a specimen under a microscope. Then he turned his back and began to groom himself with an air of dismissal.” It perfectly captures the cat’s personality and the tone of their early relationship.

While the book is an entertaining read, I wouldn’t say it left me with any profound life lessons or existential ponderings. But that’s okay. Sometimes you just need an engaging story to get lost in for a few hours. “The Cat Who Could Read Backwards” provided a welcome escape and left me feeling uplifted.

I would happily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries, quirky characters, and of course, cats. It’s a purr-fect read for a lazy weekend afternoon. I, for one, am eager to dive into the next installment of Qwilleran and Koko’s adventures. If you’re looking for a fun, feline-filled mystery to curl up with, give “The Cat Who Could Read Backwards” a try. It just might leave you grinning like a Cheshire cat.
